Workshop on 3D optical metrology for sheet metal parts

By Swati Deshpande,

Added 09 June 2017

Focused on the issues that sheet metal industry is facing

The show started with my speech on changing trends of quality control practices in industry, followed by lively presentation by Subramanya Prasad from Volkswagen who shared his experience with GOM for enhancing level of quality and discussed issues such as tool maintenance and optimization. After his presentation Pieter Schuer (Managing Director GOM Asia) with his vast knowledge of metrology, acquainted the participants with the latest developments in the field of optical metrology. Thereafter Dr. Narasimhan (Professor IIT Bombay & Head SMFRA ) took the show to next level through his enormous amount of knowledge in the field of Sheet-metal forming. He demystified FLC and material testing & analysis using optical metrology. He also shared the parameters that affect the quality of sheet material forming and method of analysis of material properties using Forming Limit Curve.

The second half was an interactive session wherein live demonstration of technology was shown with a focus on various challenges faced by sheet metal industry i.e. quality control of components, dimensional analysis, fitting of components, feature optimization, Curve based analysis, Tool and Die optimization and maintenance, virtual assembly of parts for visualization and analysis of interference with gap & flush measurement, live tracking for positioning of components without fixtures, measurement of strain in formability process .

The participants remarked the workshop as informative and beneficial as it was focused on practical issues that they are facing today. More such events on castings, plastics, tool & dies, turbine blades etc. are in line to be held across the country to spread awareness among various industries. Customer presentations, application examples, brochures as well as videos can be downloaded using the link: www.gom-workshop.com/proceedings.
