Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 12,000 crore worth modernised and expanded unit of SAIL's Rourkela steel plant on April 1. Speculation is high that he might also launch SAIL's Vision-2025 plan on that day, which includes an additional capacity expansion worth Rs 36,000 crore for its Rourkela plant.
The state-owned Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) just underwent a massive expansion and modernization drive to increase its capacity from 2 million tonnes per annum to 4.5 million tonnes per annum.
SAIL's Vision-2025 entails a secound round of expansion for the Rourkela firm, boosting its capacity to 10.8 mtpa. The budget for this is earmarked at Rs 36,000 crore. On completion, RSP will become SAIL's second largest steel plant, after Bokaro. Currently, all of the country's requirement for silicon steels, pipes, and tin plates are met by the RSP.
In all, SAIL's Vision-2025 chalks a route for increasing the company's installed capacity to an aditional 50 mtpa by 2025. This will entail an investment of around Rs 1.5 lakh crore. In accordance to Vision-2025, SAIL's Bokaro unit will undergo a capacity enhancement to reach 14.1 mtpa and installed capacity of the Bhilai plant wil be incraesed to touch 10.5 mtpa.
To support Mr Modi's call for Make in India, the country eyes a three time expansion of its total installed capacity, which currently stands at 100 mtpa.
