Germany-based proweps envirotec GmbH, a subsidiary of leading biofuels company GPS Renewables, has secured an order to expand its existing Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Västerås, Sweden.
The bioCNG plant, which has operated continuously for 15 years, can process up to 48,000 tonnes of food waste annually. The new expansion enhances the plant's capacity to handle organic waste by incorporating a liquid organic waste reception system. Proweps designed, supplied, and integrated the new waste reception system—complete with tanks, stirrers, valves, and instrumentation—into the existing setup.
The plant is designed to process a variety of waste streams, including food waste, packaged supermarket waste, and grease trap removal sludge with contaminants. Its flexibility in handling different substrates, combined with high-quality biogas production, allows the facility to produce both bioCNG and bioLNG, while also generating high-grade fertilizer for direct agricultural use. The system operates continuously with minimal personnel requirements, maintaining a clean and modern environment.
Commenting on the new project, Dieter Korz, Managing Partner of proweps, said, "We are excited to continue our longstanding partnership with VafabMiljö and to deliver additional enhancements to the existing project. Over the last several years, we've made a significant impact with our ongoing work, and we look forward to building on that momentum."
Currently, proweps is involved in several new engineering projects in Poland, Kuwait, and Israel, providing engineering services for industrial-scale anaerobic digestion plants. These projects involve feedstocks such as agricultural and industrial organic waste, as well as municipal solid waste. Proweps also extensively supports GPS Renewables in the design and engineering of compressed biogas plants in India.
