SABIC reveals innovative thermoplastic roof fairing concept

It is aerodynamically optimised to deflect air by accelerating airflow through and across the top and sides of the part.

To evaluate and quantify the aerodynamic performance of its roof fairing concept, SABIC used the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation technology. It is planning to corroborate its CFD findings with wind tunnel and on-road testing of functional prototypes on a commercial vehicle later this summer.

A 3D-printed version of SABIC's aerodynamically-optimised roof fairing was displayed at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Kentucky.

This is not the first time that SABIC has been involved in delivering a completely new roof fairing solution for the industry, contributing to the sustainability and performance goals of manufacturers and operators. It played an instrumental role in developing the industry's first injection-molded roof fairing, which is installed on heavy-duty trucks on the road today.

It is working on a number of other opportunities to improve the aerodynamic efficiencies of heavy-duty trucks with its lightweight thermoplastic-based solutions.
