BPCL and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited (SGHIPL)—a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp)—have entered a Joint Venture (JV) agreement to explore renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India. This strategic partnership aims to support India's energy transition and sustainable development goals.
The JV will pursue opportunities in renewable energy generation and green hydrogen production. It will also consider projects in green ammonia production and bunkering, emissions reduction in port operations, and the advancement of other emerging green fuel technologies. The collaboration will combine Sembcorp's global experience in renewables with BPCL's domain expertise in the petroleum sector and its vast infrastructure network.
Commenting on the partnership, G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, said: "BPCL's collaboration with Sembcorp marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable future. We will harness our combined aspirations, capabilities and resources to jointly develop innovation-led, best-in-class renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions that align with India's ambitious climate goals. This initiative also reflects our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2040. Our target of building a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio is central to our vision of becoming a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040."
Vipul Tuli, President & CEO, Renewables (West), and CEO, Hydrogen Business, Sembcorp, added: "This collaboration with BPCL is a step forward in supporting India's renewable energy and green hydrogen ambitions. Leveraging Sembcorp's expertise in clean energy and BPCL's strong presence in the petroleum sector, we aim to identify and scale solutions that decarbonise hard-to-abate industries. Sembcorp remains committed to providing scalable, low-carbon pathways to a more sustainable world."
Sembcorp is actively advancing the use of green hydrogen and ammonia as critical decarbonisation levers. With a 6 GW portfolio of renewable assets already operating in India, Sembcorp is well-placed to facilitate large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen production.
