BorgWarner, a global leader in innovative and sustainable mobility solutions, has expanded its partnership with a major North American OEM by securing extensions on two transfer case contracts for upcoming vehicle platforms with new specifications.
BorgWarner will supply two types of transfer cases: the active Electro-Mechanical On-Demand 2-Speed (EMOD) and the part-time Electric Shift-on-the-Fly 2-Speed (ESOF). These transfer cases will be featured on two of the OEM's combustion and hybrid passenger truck platforms, with an additional truck receiving the ESOF. Production is set to begin in 2027 for two platforms, with a third expected in 2028.
"We have provided this OEM with transfer cases for its combustion and hybrid passenger truck platforms for over 40 years, and we are honoured to continue supplying our transfer cases for their new models," said Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Drivetrain and Morse Systems. "These contract extensions underscore our team's reputation and the proven architecture, performance, reliability, and quality of our transfer case products. We look forward to delivering exceptional service for their vehicle platforms."
The EMOD is a high-performance, active transfer case offering faster response, enhanced torque accuracy, and pre-emptive torque management, improving overall vehicle safety and stability. Its motor-driven clutch system enables active modulation of torque distribution between the front and rear wheels based on continuously monitored parameters. While previously used in other OEM platforms, this marks the first use of the EMOD transfer case in this specific truck model.
The ESOF transfer case, tailored for part-time four-wheel drive in heavy-duty trucks, enables efficient two-wheel drive alongside an option to engage four-wheel drive on the go. It combines noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) optimisation for superior performance and smooth shifting, now in its third vehicle evolution for this truck platform.
Both transfer cases feature BorgWarner's HY-VO® driveline chain, designed for high efficiency and durability. The EMOD also incorporates BorgWarner's premium friction products. Manufacturing for the entire transfer case family will take place at BorgWarner's Seneca, South Carolina facility.
