In a landmark move, AM Green has partnered with John Cockerill Hydrogen to deploy India's largest electrolyser system for its groundbreaking green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The massive facility represents a significant stride toward AM Green's mission to produce one million tons of green ammonia annually.
Following the Final Investment Decision (FID) approval in August 2024, the green ammonia complex will utilise 1.3 GW of advanced pressurised alkaline electrolysers, supplied in two 640 MW phases, to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
Phase one of the project involves the installation of 640 MW electrolysers, marking the start of AM Green's vision to scale up green hydrogen and ammonia production. John Cockerill's cutting-edge electrolyser technology will be powered by a sustainable mix of wind and solar energy, supported by pumped hydro storage for continuous production. Production is anticipated to begin in late 2026, and the 640 MW phase-two electrolysers will be supplied from John Cockerill's upcoming manufacturing facility, India's largest electrolyser plant.
The Kakinada green ammonia facility aligns with India's ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission, designed to boost the country's role in the global green hydrogen economy. With plans to reach 5 MTPA green ammonia capacity by 2030, AM Green aims to contribute one-fifth of India's green hydrogen production targets and around 10 per cent of Europe's import goals for green hydrogen.
This partnership also places AM Green at the forefront of sustainable certification, with the Kakinada project already certified by CertifHy for compliance with the European Union's RFNBO requirements. Anil Chalamalasetty, Group Chairman of AM Green, emphasised the partnership's broader impact: "Our collaboration with John Cockerill sets a strong foundation for India's green hydrogen economy, establishing the nation as a key export hub of competitively priced green hydrogen, adhering to global standards like EU RFNBO norms."
John Cockerill CEO François Michel highlighted the collaboration as a cornerstone of the company's green hydrogen vision, aiming to drive large-scale decarbonisation through advanced electrolysis. The partnership will leverage John Cockerill's expertise across multiple sectors in India, with ambitions to transform the hydrogen economy globally through sustainable energy solutions.
Supported by the Indian government, John Cockerill's joint venture with Technip Energies, Rely, will handle the engineering, procurement, construction management, and commissioning for the facility. Credendo's support underscores the project's green credentials, with potential benefits from its Green Package.
